Almeida Theatre – 2022

The brief: Set in Bel Air, Jeremy O. Harris play tells the story of Franklin, a young up-and-coming Black artist who starts a relationship with a white, rich, middle-age collectioner. Worried about him, his mother comes to visit and the play take a surreal turn.

There was an opportunity for the Almeida to reach out to a new audience – an art audience, so I looked up pictures of artists in their studios, from Basquiat to Tracy Emin, and came up with the idea to use quotes from the script to visualise Franklin’s artistic ambitions and to hint at his obsession with finding a father figure.
