Mandela The Musical

Young Vic – 2022

The brief: Infused with the rhythms and spirit of South Africa, Mandela shines a light on Nelson Mandela’s story, and the South African people’s courageous fight for their liberation. For 27 years, Mandela and his comrades sacrificed their freedom and their families paid the price. It is a story of determination, hope and how the world rallied to free him and his people.

The campaign had two phase, the first key art was a stencil of Mandela’s face. For the cast artwork, we recreated the stark graphic quality of the stencil through styling (black turtleneck and black coat for a strong silhouette), and lighting (using flags to obscure actor Michael Luwoye’s body and the side of his face)
