King Lear – First Encounter
Royal Shakespeare Company – 2025
First Encounter is an initiative by the Royal Shakespeare Company to give young audiences (7+) their first introduction to Shakespeare’s work.
In the play, Lear walks out of his castle and into the storm after his daughters’ betrayal. The artwork shows him seen from the daughter’s point of view, through the window, his features blurred by the droplets and condensation. A child-like drawing of a crown hovers above his head, mocking the fallen king.
Photography by Seamus Ryan.
