CARE

Young Vic – 2026

In Alexander Zeldin’s powerful play about the end of life, a grandmother is moved to a care home she doesn’t want to be in by her daughter, a single mom with two feuding teenagers. Surrounded by other elderly people longing for comfort, Grandmother is resolved to get home as soon as possible, but as time passes, she comes to term with life at the care home, and holds on to unexpected moment of joy as other residents pass away around her. But will things ever get better with her family?

The artwork shows the daughter and boys trying to hold Grandmother in a tight embrace that feels more desperate than tender.

The director referenced Bill Viola and Raphael’s art at the briefing, which inspired the composition and painterly feel of the image.
